WILL NEW GOOGLE PHONE TAKE A BITE OUT OF APPLE?
FORGET Apple's iPhone, a brand new gadget promising to “change the way we use our mobiles” was launched today.
The funky T-Mobile G1 - which will be free on contract over £40 a month - is being touted as a mobile phone with all the benefits of a hand-held computer.
The Google phone, which boasts a hidden Qwerty keyboard behind a slide-out touchscreen and a 3-megapixel camera, hits the shops in November.
T-Mobile chief executive Jim Hyde said: “We’re thrilled to offer this exciting breakthrough that gives people unlimited freedom to communicate they way they want to. It will change the way we use our mobiles.”
Users will benefit from high speed internet browsing and will be able to access Google Maps and instant messaging through Google Talk.
Ernest Doku of mobile phone comparison website Omio.com seemed impressed by the phone's functions but thought it lacked the "cool factor."
“The Google phone offers the traditional smartphone experience while at the same time incorporating the touch screen features of the iPhone," he said.
"The high resolution screen, touch interface and improved Google Maps are all features which allow the G1 to match up well with the iPhone on paper at least.
“However, despite the popularity of the Google brand, the phone’s design and Google themselves lack an inherent ‘cool’ factor which made the iPhone 3G such a mass market success for Apple."
Michael Brook, editor of the T3 gadget magazine, said the phone was a departure from models by Apple and other makers.
He said: “The exciting thing about T-Mobile’s G1 is that it runs on Google’s Android operating system. Since Android is an open platform, it can be used for free.
“While Apple’s iPhone is the pinnacle of technology design, Google is attempting to change the way users can interact with their mobile phones.
“Development communities will be important to the G1, much like they are to the iPhone 3G, and it’ll be interesting to see how the phone fares with today’s tech-savvy user.”
Other manufacturers are expected to follow suit and produce their own rival Google phones over the coming months.
